The Avengers are back in action! Marvel Studios has officially revealed the star-studded cast of Avengers: Doomsday in a special livestream event that kicked off Wednesday morning. This highly anticipated film will see the return of familiar heroes alongside some unexpected faces, setting the stage for another epic showdown in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Familiar Heroes Return
Fans will be thrilled to see several MCU veterans reprising their iconic roles. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, while Anthony Mackie steps back into the role of Sam Wilson/Captain America after debuting as the new Cap in Brave New World. His co-star, Danny Ramirez, will once again play Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon.
Other returning heroes include:
- Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier
- Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man
- Tom Hiddleston as Loki
- Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther
- Winston Duke as M’Baku
- Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
- Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor
A Surprising Villainous Twist
One of the biggest bombshells is the return of Robert Downey Jr., but not as Iron Man—this time, he takes on the role of the infamous villain Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. This marks a major shift for Downey, who last appeared in Avengers: Endgame, where Tony Stark sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos.

Marvel is also bringing back several beloved X-Men characters, some of whom haven’t been seen on screen in years. This includes:
- Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier
- Ian McKellen as Magneto
- Kelsey Grammer as Beast (last seen in The Marvels post-credits scene)
- Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler (X2)
- James Marsden as Cyclops
- Channing Tatum as Gambit (following his role in Deadpool & Wolverine)
- Rebecca Romijn as Mystique (returning to the role she played before Jennifer Lawrence took over in later X-Men films)
New Faces Join the Avengers Roster
A fresh lineup of Marvel characters will be introduced, including key members of the Fantastic Four:
- Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic
- Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman
- Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing
Additionally, Thunderbolts cast members will also appear, including:
- Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
- David Harbour as Red Guardian
- Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent
- Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost
- Lewis Pullman as Bob
The Russo Brothers Return to Direct
Marvel fans will be excited to know that Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmakers behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame, are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday. Their track record with the franchise has been nothing short of spectacular, making this upcoming film one of the most anticipated MCU projects yet.
What’s Next for the MCU?
Before Avengers: Doomsday lands in theaters on May 1, 2026, Marvel has a few major releases lined up. Thunderbolts is set to arrive on May 2, 2025, followed by The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, 2025.
With its massive cast, returning legends, and the introduction of new heroes, Avengers: Doomsday promises to be a game-changer for the MCU. Fans can only imagine the high-stakes battles and shocking twists that await as Earth’s mightiest heroes reunite for their most dangerous fight yet.
